Fresh..er Logic Studios

October 05, 20073:08 PM

If you haven't been to Fresh Logic Studios in a while, you may be wondering if you're at the right website. So much has changed in the last few months that it's hard to wrap our brains around it. From design of the site, to the organization of the content, to the price of admission... everything is different.

We gathered up some great feedback about the old site and decided we needed to start from scratch and make things easier to use. You could say we've gone more minimalist than ever. The result is a site that is easier on the eyes and simpler to navigate. At the top of every page is the "Toolstrip". This is a one stop center for accessing all things Fresh Logic. Users now have instant access to any one of the products like Atlas and Folders without the need to search for a link or know the URL of the site. In addition, registered members now have a quick way to manage their account and see what their friends are up to.

Whatever you need to do, click a menu item at the top of the page and your options slide down right before your eyes... Need to upload your vacation photos to Folders so all your friends can see? Click Products -> Click on Folders -> Then click Open and right away you're sharing your photos online.

Next, thank you to all of you who signed up for a Pro membership, but we think we made a mistake. We know people want cool and useful websites to go to, but we still have to pay the bills to keep the servers running. We thought some of you like our stuff so much that you would give us just a tiny bit of money to fund the effort. Unfortunately we didn't get the reception we had hoped for, so we're starting over. From now on, everything is free. No more pro membership, no more "you get this for free, and this if you pay us". That sucks. So get it all, Atlas, Folders, Bugs, everything... for all of $0 forever. We'd rather spread the love and get more people to experience how we think websites should be, rather than limiting it to those with a few dollars to spare.

Those of you who did pay for the Pro Membership, thank you! In honor of your support, we are refunding all the money we received from selling Pro Memberships. We know that sounds crazy, but the web is about you, the user, and we love our members. So you'll be hearing more from us concerning your refund soon.

Lastly, what do you want in a website? What makes us happy is knowing that we've given you something you'll enjoy using. That's why we want your help. Tell us what you want and we'll make it. We'll be starting a new section where members can suggest new features and products and the community can vote on which one we'll do next. Every month we'll choose a winner and start working on it. You get what you want, cool free stuff, and we get what we want, happy members.

So that's it for now. There are a thousand little details I've left out so play around with the new site and check out all the cool new stuff. And please, GIVE US FEEDBACK! We can only make our site better if you tell what's wrong and what's right.

Thanks again from Fresh Logic Studios.

The iPhoneAccording to the latest Apple iPhone commercials, the iPhone's web browser, Safari, is suppose to be the real internet.  "Not a watered down version of the internet.  Not a mobile version of the internet" as their commercials say.

Well, turns out that Safari won’t be supporting Flash websites.  So, are we to believe the internet that Mac user’s have been surfing hasn’t included Flash?  Looks like the iPhone will present us a watered down version of the internet, just less watered down than other phones.

Check out the ad.

Safari

During the keynote address at the Apple WWDC today, Steve Jobs announced that the next version of Safari will run on Mac and Windows (XP and Vista).  The public beta is now available for download.

They claim that the performance is better than both Internet Explorer and Firefox.  I'd be interested to see some benchmark comparisons between Safari 3 running on Mac OS X vs. Windows Vista.  From personal experience, Safari 2 definitely was the slowest of the 3 when running on the same hardware in both html rendering and JavaScript performance.

Microsoft shows off DigiDesk

May 05, 200711:42 AM
DigiDesk

Just saw an amazing technology from Microsoft called DigiDesk.  Though it uses some technologies we've seen before including multi-touch displays, it appears to be a little farther along the other demonstrations.

For some reason this demo reminds me of some other "perfect world demos" from Microsoft during the Longhorn beta series.  Longhorn (now known as vista) was a time and place where everyone used Microsoft's cutting edge R&D products and everyone can communicate constantly and real-time.  And of course there's no war and everyone has 2.5 kids that behave perfectly and smile all the time.

Check out the article on Engadget, including a video of the demo.

Chillin' at Mix

May 01, 20071:12 AM
Mix LogoIt's only the end of day one at Mix 07 and already we've seen some pretty amazing stuff.  From spectacular Silverlight demos from Netflix and MLB, to cross platform, cross machine real-time debugging for Silverlight applications.

Currently, I'm sitting in a nice relaxing bean bag chair surrounded by 50 or more fellow mashup developers in the MIX 07 Mashup Lounge.  Groups of designers and developers are sharing and collaborating on ideas.

It's amazing timing for us at Fresh Logic.  The first minute we walked in the room, we spotted people checking out Atlas, most likely the result of the recent article on the live.com developer site.  Thanks again to the Microsoft guys for helping spread the word about our work.  And thanks for a great conference!

Windows Vista Upgrade Woes

January 29, 200710:08 AM
Windows Vista Ultimate

I just spotted this article on CNET.  It states that if you're planning on buying an upgrade version of windows Vista, unlike previous upgrade versions of Windows, you'll be required to have the old version up and running on your PC before upgrading.  That sucks!

Now all of us that love the notion of having a clean install, not to mention the performance benefits, will have to either feel dirty after our upgrades or splurge for the full version.  I think I might be sick...

2006, What a Year

January 01, 20073:39 PM

Happy New Year everyone.  It's been a huge year for the web, and for Fresh Logic Studios.  It's officially 1  year since our little mashup project, Atlas, went public.  Man, time flies by when you're having fun!

I just wanted to personally thank all of you who have supported us and helped along the way, especially all of our friends and family who've put up with our tireless work habits.  A special thanks goes out to our good friends at Microsoft for all the great support and opportunities given to us over the last year.  Being able to participate in, and contribute to the live.com project has been a ton of fun and allowed us to meet some really great people.

I can't help but get excited thinking about 2007 and what it may have in store for us here at FLS.  You can count on some big things in the near future so keep checking back.  Thanks again everyone!

"Atlas is wicked fast!"

December 07, 200610:18 AM

Take a site like Atlas, one that includes references to a plethora of JavaScript and CSS files, and you get yourself one slow loading application.

Well, we recently took the time to make some big improvements in the loading time of Atlas.  No miracle innovations or anything, basically just a couple C# handlers that combined all the JavaScript and CSS resources into two files respectively and returned the results.  This leaves the main page of Atlas with two recourses to download rather than dozens.

The result… loading time has been cut dramatically the code set has been simplified yet again.  So if you’ve been to Atlas recently and said “Wow, Atlas is wicked fast!” now you know why.

Today, while I was checking out the availability of Windows Mobile phones that have GPS, I found the HP iPAQ hw6925. It runs Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone Edition and has all the bells and whistles including: Wifi, Bluetooth, and integrated GPS.  And you know what that means, you can download Atlas Mobile and get local search, directions, and real-time tracking of your new iPAQ on Atlas, our web-based mapping and searching product.

We haven't gotten our hands on one yet, but I promise it won't be very long. The 6925 is only available through Cingular, but you can get HP 6945 straight from HP and unlocked.

Just found this jem.  It's a nice little C# app that lets you crop a specific portion of your screen and take a screenshot, copying the image to the clipboard, or printing it directly to a printer.  The reason I mention it is because I use a MacBook Pro running Windows and without a print screen button, I am handicapped.
